It is true that neurons diminish with age and memory start declining. This is the reason that in older age many people start forgetting things. But the amazing fact is that our brain has the capacity to develop new neurons even in old age. In scientific term, this concept is called Neuroplasticity. It says that our brain capacity is not fixed; it is flexible like a plastic.
For the development of new neurons, you need to exercise your brain. There are few most effective ways that would help you to improve your memory.
Keep learning a new skill: The way our body needs exercise to increase strength, similarly our brain also need exercise to improve its capacity. The more and more you use your brain, it's strength will increase. get strength. This Learning is not about your routine learning. You need to learn a new skill that challenges your mind, forces you to come out from your comfort zone and demand your full attention. For example: Learn a new language, learn an instrument, dance, art, play mind games, puzzles, chess.
Retrieval: When you learn any new information if you periodically repeat it, that piece of information will get a stronger place in your memory. When you learn something read it aloud or write it down. Simple repetition of your study will not work effectively. You also have to try to retrieve it without referring to the notes you have written and practice it periodically.
How to Improve Memory – Day2
Visualization: Our brain is designed in a way that it is easy for us to remember everything which is represented in form of videos or movies. However, words and numbers are abstract information and do not hold any meaning for our brain until it has an image. When we try to remember information in the abstract form, it needs multiple revisions and may not retain for longer in our memory. Instead of remembering abstract information, try to transform the information in the form of a story, video, and movie. Our mind will capture it quickly and will retain for long.
Association: Our mind accepts only things which are meaningful for it. That means for each new
Information, our mind asks what this information, why should learn it and how to learn it. Once it gets the answers, the mind will accept it. In order to answers, we have to establish an association between new information and existing knowledge. One of the best and easiest ways to memorize information is to create a picture and establish a connection between information. This technique changes the piece of information into a mental picture that is quite easy to remember. This technique works faster because our brain captures and stores the visual images much easier than a text. Our brain does not understand a simple unknown text. That is the reason that we are able to recall the faces or the places but sometimes forget its name.
Mnemonics: Mnemonics is a technique which is used to remember the information in an easier way. Using this technique we can memorize information in form of phrases, songs, rhymes, or in other forms which is easy to recall the data. Mnemonics method is useful to recall the information we have remembered. Develop a practice to form mnemonics for remembering information. There are various forms of mnemonics like ACRONYMS, ACROSTICS, Number mnemonics, Image Mnemonics, Rhyme Mnemonics, music Mnemonics.
You might have used mnemonics in your school days as well like the mnemonics to remember the color of the spectrum is VIBGYOR (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, RED).
